New York's Lesbian-Gay Pride moves to midtown
New York-New York City's Lesbian and Gay Pride Rally, the kick-off event to the annual Pride Week celebration in the Big Apple, makes history this year when it moves from Greenwich Village to midtown Manhattan's Bryant Park. The 1997 Rally, produced by the non-profit organization Heritage of Pride, Inc., is scheduled for Sunday, June 22, from 2:00 to 6:00 pm. "Never before has the Lesbian and Gay community achieved such monumental gains politically, found acceptance from those once against us, or reached such a high level of national visibility. Bryant Park officials should be commended for bringing New York City's Lesbian and Gay Pride Rally to center stage," commented Candace Gingrich, sister of House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Candace Gingrich will be featured at this year's rally, along with over 20 other speakers, comedians, and musical acts.
"Bryant Park is not only the most beautiful public space in the city, it is also located in the heart of Manhattan, near the main branch of the New York Public Library, Times Square, the fashion district, and Grand Central Station. It is a great space for us to demonstrate our Pride," said organizer Maryanne Roberto. Bryant Park is located on Sixth Avenue (also known as the Avenue of Americas), between 40th and 42nd Streets.
"We are thrilled to be moving to the most exciting neighborhood the City has to offer," explained Michael Bath, chair of the rally committee.
This year's rally will be emceed by lesbian comic Marga Gomez. Speakers scheduled to appear at the 1997 rally include James Earl Hardy, author of B-Boy Blues, a gay novel grounded in the "Africentric" experience; Cathy Che, a contributing writer at Time Out New York; and Mark Harrington, policy director of the Treatment Action Group, which works
to inform the HIV community about new AIDS treatment developments.
Entertainment includes Vicky Sue Robinson, the disco diva known for the original version of "Turn The Beat Around;" Felix A. Pire, star of the one-
wich Village, and down Christopher Street. There will be a moment of silence at 2:00 pm to remember those who have died from AIDS.
The grand marshals for the event are Barbara Gittings, the founder of the first

The 28th Annual March will take place on Sunday, June 29 from noon to approximately 6:00 pm. The march steps off from 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue, follows a lavender stripe down Fifth into Green-
east coast chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis in 1958; and Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank.
PrideFest, a combination street fair, community information center and block party that last year attracted over 350,000 people, will also take place on Sunday, June 29, from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm. The location for Pridefest is Greenwich Street from Christopher Street to Spring Street. There will be free entertainment from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
And for those who feel that no Pride event is complete without dancing, the Hudson River waterfront will be the location of the "World's Largest Open-
Air Gay and Lesbian Pride Dance." The event will take place from 4:30 pm to 10:30 pm, and all of the proceeds will directly benefit the Lesbian and Gay Pride March and Rally. DJ Mark Thomas of the Saint, Sound Factory Bar and the Lure fame will open the event. Max Rodriguez, who spins at the Roxy, Splash and the Palladium, will close the event.
The Dance on the Waterfront has become one of the country's premiere circuit
party events, attracting people from across the United States and throughout Europe.
"Every year this event draws the most beautiful men and sexiest women, creating a magical Pride experience that surrounds everyone, drawing them into its pulsating beat and soaring vocals," said Syndia Diaz, chairperson of Heritage of Pride's Dance committee.
The evening will climax with a rainbow fireworks display over the Hudson River at 10:30 pm.
Tickets for the dance on the waterfront are $20 if purchased between June 1 and June 26th; and $25 after June 26 until the event sells out. Tickets can be purchased at 800-494-8497.
